It is indeed an occupational hazard.
Occupational hazard is “a working condition that can lead to illness or death”. For instance, a factory may hurt himself while working on dangerous machines or a taxi driver has a constant risk of getting involved in an car accident.
On the other hand, if you’re a rock star you have a far higher chance of dying because of drug and alcohol abuse than the rest of the public. It is an occupational hazard. When I did my research for this specific hub, I found more than 250 musicians that have died the last 30 years or so, due to drugs overdose and alcohol consumption. It is a pity really that talented artists die because they abuse their bodies by injecting and/or drinking poison, but hey…this rock & roll. After all there hundreds (I managed to count 338) of drug related songs, such as:
- A Passage To Bangkok (Rush),
- Ain't It Fun (Rocket From The Tombs),
- All Night Train (The Allman Brothers Band),
- Bagman (Stone Temple Pilots),
- Beetlebum (Blur),
- Cocaine (JJ Cale),
- Gravedancer (Velvet Revolver),
- Hate To Feel (Alice in Chains),
- Heroin (The Velvet Underground),
- I'm Waiting For The Man (The Velvet Underground),
- Junkhead (Alice in Chains),
- Meds (Placebo),
- Motorhead (Hawkwind),
- Mr. Brownstone (Guns N' Roses),
- Opium Trail (Thin Lizzy),
- Poison Was The Cure (Megadeth),
- Sister Morphine (The Rolling Stones),
- Snowblind (Black Sabbath),
- The House Jack Built (Metallica),
- The Needle And The Damage Done (Neil Young),
- The Needle And The Spoon (Lynyrd Skynyrd),
- The Pusher (Steppenwolf),
- True Faith (New Order),
- We Are All on Drugs (Weezer),
- White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane),
- Would? (Alice in Chains) and many, many more.
The following list includes musicians that were related to the rock genre who died due to substance-abuse before they even reached 30! The list does not include members of the Jazz, Fusion, Country and Rap genre and of course people who passed the threshold (!) of 30 years old. Overall, my research showed that the average age of death for the rock stars that passed away because of substance-abuse is merely 29!
List of Rock Stars who did not reach 30 years old

The coroner reported that he died from “acute heroin, morphine and ethanol intoxication due to inhalation and ingestion of overdose". Sad list, isn't it? I wrote a hub about Hank Williams and I speculated in the reply section that Hank is probably in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an "early influence" on lifestyle instead of music, given that he died of a morphine-induced heart attack at 29.
BTW, I'm surprised you didn't include "Life in the Fast Lane" in your drug song list. My absolute least favorite Eagles song ever (probably because of the subject matter).
Thanks for the eye-opening hub.
Lucky man Theocharis, I saw them play once, but never got to meet the band.
Thanks for remembering Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson, and for mentioning my book, "Blind Owl Blues"! However, my extensive research in said book indicates that he most likely did *not* commit suicide. All evidence, as well as the coroner's verdict, points to an accidental death. If you'd like to learn more, I hope you'll feel welcome to get in touch with me: rebecca@blindowlbio.com. I'd be happy to provide you with more information on the life and death of this brilliant man. And, of course, you can always read my book for the full story. It's available through my website at http://BlindOwlBio.com. Thanks again for featuring him as part of this list.

Good review Theocharis. My favourite 'dead' rockstars song is Chinese Rocks done by members of the Ramones and Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers. Thunders dies of a heroin OD in the 1990s as did Dee Dee Ramone - in fact most of the people performing in the song (which is about heroin) are now dead from the effects of the drug. Cheers Michael
